More than 80 percent of the elephant habitat in India has some form of human disturbance, and about 100 elephants die each year from conflict with humans. For example, A. Christy Williams found that elephants in northwest India were twice as likely to die from human related causes -- like train accidents, being killed while raiding for crops, or being electrocuted due to low-hanging power lines. Crop raiding by elephants, a major reason for conflict between elephants and humans, results in loss of hundreds and thousands of dollars and costs many elephant and human lives.
