from Carol and Scott
2007, the year of FIRE, lived up to its name. This year found us fully engaged
in our recovery from the previous painful year of loss. A simmering fire within
seemed to be the theme as we worked through levels of denial and sadness, with
the will to recover being the common thread in all our lives. Learning to let
go of what did not serve us brought about unforeseeable changes and shifts that
set us on a healthier course. Our collective family of elephants, staff and supporters
made it through this fiery year wiser and more appreciative of the many blessings
bestowed upon us. Honesty and loyalty, two underlying values of our organization,
guided us through the many changes we experienced. This coming year will find
us stronger and more determined to follow the lead of Our Girls in the pursuit
of loving kindness. Thank you for supporting our blessed work for captive elephants.
We wish you a very Happy New Year and greater peace for our earth.

| The
Elephant Sanctuary Solstice 2007
‘Twas the night
before Solstice, and all throughout T-E-S,
The eles were happy, beloved and blessed.
The caregivers brought baskets of hay, fruit,
and grain
To the beautiful pachyderms who sang their
refrain.
As rumbles and trumpets rose in the air high
Over Tennessee hills to the dark starry sky,
Twenty-three eles, some solid, some spirit,
Graced habitats and barns, protected from harm.
Tarra and Shirley and Bunny and Sissy,
Winkie and Delhi, Dulary, and Misty,
At home in T-E-S Asia, rambunctious but sweet,
Were waiting and watching for well-deserved
treats.
While in T-E-S Africa, at the close of the
day,
Quite full with fresh fruits and timothy hay,
Majestic and lovely, the African Queens,
Tange, Zula, and Flora toppled trees in their
dreams.
And in the T-E-S land where the eight Divas
roam,
The caregivers checked each one in their home,
Liz, Frieda and Billie, Minnie, Queenie, and
Ronnie,
Debbie and last but not least, also Lottie.
Over trees, barns, and meadows, by most sight
unseen,
Were Lota, Barbara, and Tina and Jenny Jelly
Bean,
The four spirit eles, spreading great love
and care,
As angelic Joanna helped everyone there.
Then, when the caregivers came back from their
rounds,
And peace could be felt all over the
grounds,
The dogs, cats, and eles, each in bed, snug
and tight,
Suddenly heard a voice call through the air,
clear and bright,
“Sleep well, all you beauties! You’re safe and all right!
Happy Solstice to all, and to all a good night!”

The Little Tree
Standing alone in a forest,
surrounded by others of its kind, stands
a
little pine. Not at all perfect in its
form, rather sparse and plain, until
surrounded by those who have grown to
love it.
The land the little pine
stands on is hallowed ground. Grown from
the love
of two people for one creature. The land
grew and was filled with more
creatures of its kind. The tree was found
by a dear soul who loved to wander
through the hills and meadows. Once a
year she returns to visit the little
tree.
In time another joined
the first. One who had traveled far to
come to this place. One who wore a crown
of wild grapes perched upon her head.
And in
time again another joined. How ill she
was upon coming to this land with her
dearest friend. Then another, one different
from the others, but this one
had loved them all. And yet again another
joined this little group. One once
maimed but now whole.
The group slowly makes
their way to the place where this little
tree stands. As each grows nearer the
taller and brighter the little tree shines.
A glow
from within that will last only as long
as this little group remains.
They stay for awhile
and grow warm from the bonds of love
they share, surrounding the little tree.
The little tree knows that some day a
sister
will join them. But not now. The sister
is needed elsewhere.
Their stay lasts long
enough to see a great star rise in the
night sky, for a time appearing to top
the little tree. Their stay comes to
an end and the
group stands ready to leave. As each
passes they reach out and touch a
branch and slowly ever slowly the light
dims in the little tree. They all
know that this visit will keep them warm
until they meet again. The group
turns to leave, returning to watch over
the ones they left behind.
Knowing that in just a few seasons they
will return ...

Lota

Jenny
...the little tree waits...
