Elephant Awareness Month

In recognition of the commitment, perseverance, and milestones achieved by The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, the State of Tennessee, Lewis County and the City of Hohenwald have declared October 2007 as Elephant Awareness Month.

A proclamation signed by Governor Phil Bredesen states: "The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee continually sets and reaches goals to better the lives of all elephants worldwide."

City and County Proclamations were presented and signed On October 1 by City Mayor Don Jones and County Mayor Kenneth Turnbow to Sanctuary Co-Founders Carol Buckley and Scott Blais. Click here to see the press release.

Proclamation

Are you aware? Elephants in the wild can live 60 or more years, but the average lifespan of elephants in zoos and circuses is only 35. Because they are forced to stand on concrete and other hard surfaces, Osteomyelitis (bone infection) is the #1 cause of premature death of zoo and circus elephants.

October 9   Lewis County Chamber of Commerce Luncheon. Manuel Zeitlin (Education Gallery/Welcome Center architect) is Featured Speaker.
October 12   Nashville Scene photo shoot.
October 13-14   Oktoberfest in Hohenwald with Sanctuary outreach booth plus video and signage in Education Gallery/Welcome Center windows.
October 15   Education Gallery & Welcome Center Groundbreaking at 11 a.m.
October 18-20   Arts and Crafts Show at The Factory in Franklin, TN. Sanctuary outreach booth. (Silent auction on the 20th).
October 20   VIP Patron Day.
October 22   Carol speaks to Lewis County Middle School.
Goodsearch.com has scheduled the Elephant Sanctuary as the "Charity of the Day."
October 25   Carol visits Lewis County High School Enrichment Classes.
October 27   American Association of Zoo Veterinarians facilities tour.
October 29   Carol speaks at Princess Theatre in Decatur, AL.
