Education Manager

Purpose
Responsible for directing the Sanctuary towards becoming a world-class education center for adults and children through creation and administration of all education-related programs and management of the Education Gallery, staff, and volunteers. Creating, leading, and communicating the Sanctuary's program in education through distance learning and local outreach to the widest possible audience.

Drives education towards a wide range of target audiences, including: Sanctuary staff and volunteers, school children, the animal welfare community, federal and state regulatory agencies and government officials, the scientific, veterinary and academic communities, college and graduate level students and the general public.

Parameters

  • Supervised by the Director of Development and Communication
  • Position Type: Full-Time, Exempt
  • Pre-employment Requirements: Drug Test, TB Test, Valid Driver's License, Social Security Card, I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification, Confidentiality and Non-Disclosure Agreement
  • Post-employment is subject to random Drug and Alcohol Tests and annual TB Test

Responsibilities
Under the direction of the Director of Development and Communication:

Communication

  • Leads communication activities to ensure that the Sanctuary's education mission, values and activities reach targeted audiences
  • Creation and management of all new educational materials posted on the website, and ongoing maintenance of website education materials so it is up to date, accurate, and appropriate to the Sanctuary's mission
  • Representing the Education Gallery as a community resource and a local and national treasure
  • Acting as the spokesperson for the Sanctuary's educational program as appropriate, through both conventional and social media

Education Gallery

  • Assists in the development of the Sanctuary's Education Gallery
  • Manages the Distance Learning project
  • Manages the Ele-cams project
  • Develops the strategic marketing plan for the Education Gallery, including all communications and public relations
  • Manages group visits to the Education Gallery
  • Creates protocols for learning assessment reports and program effectiveness evaluations
  • Manages the research and development of targeted educational material and curriculum suitable for each target group

Resource Development

  • Assists the DDC in education resource development
  • Creates and implements the annual and long-term education budget
  • Assists in seeking and applying for education grants
  • Coordinates on-site Sanctuary Volunteer Program; e.g. evaluates applications, prepares and distributes volunteer orientation packages prior to volunteer arrival, organizes volunteer assignments, coordinates Sanctuary needs with Director of Elephant Husbandry and Director of Facilities
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and compentencies

  • Bachelor Degree in Education, Communications or Wildlife Conservation preferred
  • Mimnimum one to two years prior work experience in education, museum or equivalent setting
  • Public relations skills
  • Working knowledge of Outlook computer programs to include Word and Excel

Physical Demands

  • Primarily sedentary work. Must be able to sit / stand for 8 hours
  • Walking, bending, light lifting
