The Board of Directors of The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee invites applications for the position of Chief Executive Officer.
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, founded in 1995, is the nation's largest natural habitat refuge developed specifically for endangered Asian and African elephants. It is located on 2,700 acres in Hohenwald, Tennessee - 85 miles southwest of Nashville. The Elephant Sanctuary is not open to the general public.
The Elephant Sanctuary exists to:
- provide a haven for old, sick, or needy elephants where they can freely exercise their true natures and are treated with respect and minimal intrusion;
- provide education about the crisis facing these intelligent, complex, and endangered creatures, both in captivity and in their natural habitats;
- support non-invasive studies, prgressive methods of management and enlightened care of resident elephants;
- share knowledge and consult with other related organizations working to improve the conditions for elephants worldwide.
The Elephant Sanctuary does provide the public with a select number of ways to observe, learn, and support The Elephant Sanctuary without restricting the movements of our elephants or intruding on their sanctuary. These activities include on-property volunteer opportunities, live streaming video and distance learning educational seminars, Caregiver presentations at the Welcome Center and outreach activities throughout the region and around the country.
The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. It is accredited by The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and is licensed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
The CEO is responsible for the day-to-day operation of The Sanctuary, as well as effective leadership in working with the Board of Directors and the management team in establishing and carrying out goals, strategies, plans, and policies. The CEO functions as chief spokesperson, advocate, outreach, and development officer.
Selection criteria include:
- A Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in a related subject, or significant leadership experience and accomplishments in a relevant area
- A track record of successful leadership and management experience
- Successful experience with an animal-related nonprofit having a proven record of sustained organizational growth
- A demonstrated capacity for and commitment to a collaborative, transparent, honest, ethical, and supportive work environment
- Exceptional communication skills with staff, board, media, donors, and the public, with a demonstrated ability to articulate the unique aspects of the mission and core values of the Sanctuary
- A team oriented and nurturing management style
- Successful experience cultivating and soliciting funds from individuals, foundations, and corporations.
