Elephant Caregiver/Veterinary Technician

The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has an immediate opening for a full-time elephant caregiver who is a qualified veterinary technician.

Responsibilities include all caregiver duties (as outlined on the caregiver page) and additionally assisting the Sanctuary veterinarian in regular medical procedures, in-house lab work, and data collection. The Veterinary Technician will assist the veterinarians with any duties as directed, including but not limited to, preparing and participating in procedures, compounding medications, performing treatments at the direction of the veterinarian, and ordering and maintaining medical, surgical, laboratory, and research supplies and equipment.

The successful candidate for this position will be detail-oriented and a team-player and able to follow directions of the supervising veterinarian. Must hold current Tennessee license (or be eligible).

The chosen candidate will be trained (in-house) to manage elephants using the non-dominance technique of Passive Control. Candidate must be physically fit and able to lift 50 lbs., have a strong work ethic and a progressive attitude toward the welfare of captive elephants. Candidate must possess the ability to work unassisted and be self-motivated. Due to the job requirement, the candidate must be mechanically inclined and able to work weekends.

Salary range $20,000-$24,500 is dependant on experience and includes benefits; 6 months probationary period.
