Joyce Poole
Elephant Researcher, Author, Keynote Speaker

Joyce Poole was invited to be the keynote speaker at the 22nd Annual Elephant Managers Workshop hosted by Disney's Animal Kingdom, November 9 - 12, 2001.

Although Joyce was not able to attend the workshop due to flight complications from her research site in Africa, she provided her speech on audio tape along with a slide show which was presented in her absence.

Scott Blais, co-founder and director of The Elephant Sanctuary was present when Joyce's speech and slide show was presented. He was astonished at the simple truth that Joyce dared to express to this group which consisted of captive elephant managers, veterinarians, breeders, researchers, and enthusiasts.

Scott stated, "Joyce posed some very pointed and relevant questions, many that the industry does not wish to acknowledge. Her insight and direct approach to the problem of impoverished lives forced upon captive elephants was refreshing."

Joyce has graciously granted permission to the Elephant Sanctuary to post her speech, which we now do with true reverence for her work and her wisdom.
