In O'Connell-Rodwell's latest study, scheduled to be published in July, 2007, the elephant specialist reports these seismic signals are so sophisticated that elephants can distinguish whether the messaging comes from trusted fellow herd members or strangers -- a sort of "caller ID of the wild," according to O'Connell-Rodwell. The next step in her research is to figure out how the elephants make these distinctions.

Tiger, Tiger: Why it's time to reconsider the whole notion of putting wild animals in zoos
My grandpa, Leo Gellman, was a zookeeper at the Milwaukee zoo. I asked grandpa if he thought the deal was fair. He thought and said, “It's a good deal for us, and not such a good deal for them.” I still think grandpa was right.

Our primary goals in filing the lawsuit were to encourage Amazon to honor lawful standards and to apply the same degree of consistency to animal fighting materials that it observes in relation to narcotics trafficking and other clearly criminal practices. As the instigator of this litigation, we obviously deplore Amazon’s position on the sale of materials that contravene federal law, and we have sought to make the strongest possible case on legal grounds.

Concernng the Use of Punishment by Zoo and Circus Trainers Towards Their Elephants
Joyce Poole, internationally known expert on elephants stated in her Keynote Address to the 22nd Annual Elephant Managers Workshop: "I have no idea how this myth was started, but I have never seen (wild) calves 'disciplined.' Protected, comforted, cooed over, reassured and rescued, yes, but punished, no. Elephants are raised in an incredibly positive and loving environment. If a younger elephant, or in fact anyone in the family, has wronged another in some way, much comment and discussion follows. Sounds of the wronged individual being comforted are mixed with voices of reconciliation.

Nature Chronicles African Elephant Families
On the grassy Kenya savannah beneath the snowy peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, filmmaker Martyn Colbeck has filmed and photographed elephants for nearly 20 years. He patiently earned the trust of a matriarch named Echo and her offspring, and, with that trust, privileged glimpses into the most intimate moments of their lives. Colbeck has captured nothing less than a stirring family saga spanning generations, including poignant births and deaths, carefree play and ferocious fights, reluctant partings and joyous reunions – even every mother’s worst nightmare, the kidnapping of her baby. Narrated by Colbeck, Unforgettable Elephants premieres Sunday, April 1 at 8 p.m. (ET) on PBS (check local listings).

Elephant Breeding in Arkansas Causes a Stir
Animal rights advocates across the nation say the zoos have still got it wrong when it comes to the biggest land mammal: the elephant. They say elephants suffer in zoos because of lack of space and resulting foot and skeletal problems. They say an effort by an American Zoo and Aquarium group, the National Elephant Center, to create an elephant research center in the hills of north Central Arkansas will bring their battle to Little Rock if the center puts zoo priorities over the animals' emotional and physical well-being.

Clara, an elephant with failing health at the St. Louis Zoo
In response to the many concerned individuals who feel that Clara, an elephant with failing health living at the St. Louis Zoo, should be moved to The Elephant Sanctuary, we, the Sanctuary caregivers, would like to comment. Although it would be our greatest pleasure to accept Clara into our family, her deteriorating health suggests that she does not have long to live. The zoo has shown no interest in moving Clara to the Sanctuary and even if they did, we feel such a decision would have been made too late to help Clara. It is our opinion that the best that can be done for Clara at this time is to support her with the best care available at the zoo to make her passing as pain free as possible. Indeed we would like to be able to bring Clara to the Sanctuary and return her to good health but realistically that is not possible; Clara’s condition cannot be reversed. Please help the zoo provide a caring and healthful environment in which Clara can pass pain free, knowing she is loved and respected.

The Elephant Sanctuary Has Received a Four-Star Rating from Charity Navigator.
For the second consecutive year The Elephant Sanctuary has received a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America's largest independent evaluator of charities. Only 12% of the charities rated by Charity Navigator have received at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that The Elephant Sanctuary outperforms most charities in America in its efforts to operate in the most fiscally responsible way possible. This “exceptional” designation from Charity Navigator differentiates The Elephant Sanctuary from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust. Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that an organization excels, as compared to other charities in America, in successfully managing the finances of its organization in an efficient and effective manner. This consistency in The Elephant Sanctuary's rating is an exceptional feat, especially given the economic challenges many charities have had to face in the last year.

An Open Apology to Elephants
The elephants are retaliating for being hunted down for their ivory tusks, for the culling of their herds, the kidnapping of their young, the exploitation and abuse they suffer in captivity and for finding themselves increasingly squeezed out of their natural habitat by an invasion of human settlers. All this, the experts say, has led to a breakdown of the close societal ties of elephant herds. In short, the elephants are at war with mankind, a war they are losing.
