THANK YOU, Granite Hills High School

Dear Carol and Staff:
Granite Hills High School (faculty, staff, and students) have been contributing to our very own "I Helped An Elephant" fundraiser which was inspired by your website and newsletter. I found your website when browsing the internet after reading a book on elephants. I told a few of my student aides (I'm the librarian at Granite Hills) about the Elephant Sanctuary and we spent quite a bit of time looking at the Live Elephant Cam. (This is something we now check each day!) My students and I - along with a few other staff members thought it would be great if we could raise enough money to purchase at least a "Jumbo" for your "Acres For Elephants" campaign. We did not advertise, we just told people about it and asked if they wanted to donate. Every student who gave a dollar or more and every staff member who gave at least five dollars received an "I Helped An Elephant" pin and an Elephant Tag with their name on it, which we displayed in the library. (See attachments!) Some of our kids did a pretty cool job decorating theirs (as
did the staff...!) Anyway, word spread on its own and people kept coming into the library asking to "buy an elephant". I went on your website and bought (along with other items) the "Urban Elephant" video, which several teachers showed in class. We've now raised $700! I am planning on mailing you a Cashier's check and we'll donate it to the Sanctuary in "honor of Granite Hills High School." We are, by the way, a fairly large school of 2,800 students, located in El Cajon, California - just east of San Diego.

March 2002 - Look What These Third Graders Did!

Joan Goble's third grade students at Cannelton Elementary in Cannelton, Indiana collected pennies for two months and raised $60 for Bunny's medical care. Thanks kids!
Students from Northwestern University, IL spent their 2002 Spring break at the Sanctuary.
Thirteen motivated and energetic students chose to volunteer their services working at the Sanctuary as their alternative Spring break. Their visit was utilized as a Spring cleaning of sorts. The students willingly cleared out an old wooden storage structure affectionately referred to as the red barn. They learned how to prepare elephant diets and fertilized and seeded an area next to the barn which will develop into a lush grassy area later this Spring. A few took on the daunting task of organizing and cleaning the work shop, while others swept and pressure washed the elephant barn.
Their volunteer experience would not have been complete if each student had passed on an opportunity to get covered with paint and ticks, a staple of Sanctuary life during the warm season. Painting hundreds of feet of elephant corral gave the students an idea of the vastness of the elephant's habitat and the wildlife that reside there.
Without a complaint and with much enthusiasm these students tackled any project presented and appeared to enjoy every minute of it. The Sanctuary staff was impressed with the motivation and sensitivity demonstrated by this group of students and knows they each will accomplish great things in their lifetime.
