February 2002 - It's Grapevine Time!!

J.P. Downey comes out every February with a pick-up truck overflowing with fresh cut grape vines, trimming from his Tennessee Ridge, TN, property.
The elephants consider the grape vines a delicacy. The grape vines are put inside the barn for the elephants and when they return at sunset their delight vibrates throughout the barn with trumpets, chirps and squeaks.
Mr. Downey is pictured with Ginny Shambarla, our current intern from Connecticut.
Alternative Spring Break March 2001
An energetic group of students from an organization called Alternative Spring Break volunteered for a day at the Sanctuary.Ê Alternative Spring Break is a student run organization that places teams of University of Illinois at Chicago students at volunteer sites across the country. The organization is dedicated to education through community service and experiential learning.
Eleven students spent a day at the Sanctuary tearing down old cattle fencing. Once the job was complete everyone involved was pleased with the days work. Sanctuary staff was grateful for the help.
