The boys and girls shown above are from the third grade classes at Shettler Elementary School in Muskegan, MI who recently raised money for the Elephant Sanctuary. How this happened is explained below in an excerpt from a letter to Carol Buckley, Director of the Elephant Sanctuary, written by the teacher who organized this event, Ms. Gina Clark.

May 23, 2002

Dear Ms. Buckley,

I am a third grade teacher in Muskegon, Michigan. I have always been an animal advocate and I try to teach my classes each year about respect and compassion for animals. This year, we studied an animal near and dear to my heart (and yours) — elephants! Our study lasted several months and included the elephants at your Sanctuary. Your website and its stories fascinated my class. They loved learning about the lives of each of your residents and really wanted to help in some way.

They decided to do a fundraiser to benefit the Elephant Sanctuary. We involved the two other third grade classrooms in our school and put together a cookbook. They designed the cover, the advertisements, and they typed their recipes. The cookbook sold for $5.00 each and was a big hit. It raised a grand total of $1,875.00 for the elephants. Please use this money where the need is the greatest — land, food, etc. ...

I plan to continue to work to raise public awareness about the plight of the captive elephant and I intend to do a fundraiser every year.

Thank you for everything you do for elephants!

Very truly yours,

Gina M. Clark

Needless to say, the thoughtfulness, compassion, and hard work of these wondeful kids and Ms. Clark is very much appreciated.
