The
700-acre "Lake Land" property is well known throughout Lewis
County, not only as an elephant habitat but for its many other uses over
the years. The property remained in private hands even when paper companies
were buying up the surrounding properties. The 25-acre lake makes this
a unique property in the county and may have been the single reason for
it not being sold to a commercial paper company. The land has remained
in private hands and was never ravaged by clear cutting. Most residents
of Lewis County have a story involving the lake land, all centering
around the expansive, spring fed lake. At one point the lake was open for
recreational fishing. Trout runs were created at the mouth of the spring
which feeds the lake. The trout runs have been abandoned for years but
the concrete structures remain. |
