Article in REDBOOK April 2002

A page from the May 2002 issue of REDBOOK shows Meg Ryan during the filming of an elephant documentary she made in Asia. Asian elephants have been an endangered species since 1972, but today they are in greater danger than ever before because of ivory poaching and the disruption of their migration routes.

The Elephant Sanctuary, a refuge for old, injured, and sick elephants from American zoos and circuses and located in Hohenwald, Tennessee, needs more space for its residents. You can help by contributing to Acres for Elephants!

Article in National Geograpic World April 2002

The article in National Geographic World recounts the reunion of Jenny, an abandoned circus elephant, with Shirley, a new arrival at the Sanctuary.

Jenny and Shirley (shown above, right) had been barn mates 25 years earlier. After more than two decades apart, they recognized each other. Now they share everything. They're never apart and often stand touching. The mutual devotion of the animals amazes Buckley, who says she's never seen such togetherness. It's true that elephants never forget — especially their friends!

Parade Magazine 2/24/02

Parade Magazine featured Carol Buckley and The Elephant Sanctuary in their Feb. 24, 2002 edition. The full-page article included information about how the Sanctuary came to be — "Tarra, the sanctuary's first resident, was my inspiration," Buckley explained. She went on to say that "The elephants are still captive here, but we can't release them into the wild, because there is no wild to release them to. Their natural habitat has been destroyed. There isn't even enough room for the elephants that still live in the wild. So this is the best we can do for these girls for now."

Hundreds of thousands of people read this article, raising awareness for the plight of captive elephants everywhere.

E-chievement Award — December 2002. Carol Buckley was presented the E-chievement Award in celebration of those people "making a positive difference in their communities and beyond". This award was presented by Whole Food Market and e-town E-chievement Award
15th Annual Genesis awards
Genesis Awards — March 2001. Carol Buckley was selected as Guest of Honor for the 15th annual Genesis Awards banquet held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. Upon taking the stage for her acceptance speech, Carol received a standing ovation. Each year a guest of honor is chosen, recognizing the person who has brought the most media attention to his or her cause. It was obvious that Carol was the right choice as four of the Genesis Award winners featured The Elephant Sanctuary!

The Urban Elephant — a National Geographic & Nature Series Program originally shown on PBS Sunday, November 19, 2000. A poignant and powerful portrayal of the difficult and sometimes tortured lives of elephants living in captivity. The documentary ends on a positive and hopeful note with the highlighting of the reunion of Jenny and Shirley, two ex-circus elephants, separated 25 years, now living at the Elephant Sanctuary. The overwhelming display of emotion and recognition these old friends exhibit gives credence to the belief that elephants are emotionally complex creatures who never forget.
