Tange
was orphaned in South Africa as an infant when her family
was culled. She was sent to a zoo in Georgia where she lived for
nearly thirty years with one other elephant. Tange is submissive
to both Zula and Flora.
She
is recognized by her large eyes and good natured interactions
with other elephants. She has short thick ivory, a long tail and
the longest body of all three African elephants |
Zula was
orphaned at two years old when her family was killed
in a culling. She was captured and sent to live in a
zoo. She was a dominant individual but had only lived
with one other elephant for nearly 30 years. She was regal
is stature and held her head higher than Tange.
The
edge of her right ear was tattered. Her ivory was longer
than Tange and Flora's. Her face was thinner than Tange's
and she was often seen in the company of Tange.
For almost 5 years, Zula flourished at The Elephant Sanctuary, enjoying the space and richness of her environment in the company of her best friend and ardent admirer, Tange.
Zula died suddenly on January 11, 2009. Deep sorrow is felt by caregivers and elephant family alike.
