HOLLYWOOD animal lovers have a hefty new cause celebre

Flora, a 21-year-old African elephant who will retire in style from the circus next week. Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, Paris Hilton, Hayley Duff, Shannon Elizabeth and Miss USA Susie Castillo are all faithful Flora supporters, sporting t-shirts bearing her likeness.

Orphaned at the age of three when poachers killed her mother for ivory, Flora moved to America and was made the star of her own traveling "Circus Flora." She performed faithfully for 18 years and is now ready to retire to that hotbed of aging tusked talent, the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn.

By sporting Flora-ware and spreading the word, the stars have raised $70,000 of the $200,000 needed to provide living space, food, and veterinary care for the beloved pachyderm.

Castillo plans to visit Flora at her temporary digs at the Miami Zoo to see her off on her journey to Tennessee on March 3. But perhaps the staunchest supporter of all is Diaz, who is said to sleep with a framed photo of her peanut-loving pal next to her bed every night. "They automatically clicked because they're both entertainers," explained Cassandre La France, a dpublicist promoting Flora's plight.
