As the newest Sanctuary residents Punch and Mikki continue to settle into their new home at Hickory Barn and Habitat, Care Staff have continued the careful process of facilitating introductions with longtime resident Nosey. So far, three shared-space interactions have taken place between Nosey and Punch—each one providing valuable insight into their social dynamics.
In their first introduction, Punch made a strong impression, confidently establishing herself as the more dominant elephant. Nosey responded cautiously, eventually choosing to create some distance with a trumpet and quick retreat. Punch did not follow, and the two shared a brief, calm moment before the session ended.
Since then, the following two interactions have been much more relaxed. Punch remained calm and attentive, while Nosey—still showing signs of wariness—allowed gentle interaction. Care Staff note that once Punch shows her dominate nature, she typically settles into a more social and friendly demeanor with companions who respect her presence.
And in true Nosey fashion, there is always room for a little nighttime excitement. One recent evening, after a spirited trumpet exchange with Mikki over the fence, Nosey stirred some late-night activity in the habitat. Nosey’s call woke Edie, who quickly joined the fun, rushing out to the shared barrier. What followed was 45 minutes of lively back-and-forth—Nosey running from gate to gate, Mikki and Punch watching from their side, and Edie trumpeting and trying to keep up. The two finally met inside the barn for some classic sparring and play bows before everyone settled down for the night.
These early moments, full of curiosity, communication, and cautious steps, are just the beginning of what we hope will be many positive connections ahead.
