Care Staff at Hickory Habitat are pleased to share that the relationship between African female Edie, who arrived in 2023 from Knoxville Zoo, and African female Mikki, who joined The Sanctuary in 2025 from Louisville Zoo, is growing in positive ways. The two elephants have been choosing to share space frequently, both inside the barn and throughout the habitat.
During the first week of sharing barn space, Edie appeared cautious of Mikki’s movements and would often reposition herself or leave the stall when Mikki approached. Over a short time, that wariness has eased. As Mikki has consistently demonstrated calm behavior, Edie has become noticeably more relaxed, including comfortably sharing hay and browse.
Mikki has taken on a more dominant role in the relationship, while remaining respectful and appropriate with Edie. Care Staff have observed very little aggression or resource guarding. The pair are sometimes seen engaging in gentle sparring behaviors or resting together near the barn, occasionally with their faces pressed together while relaxing in the sun.
Staff have also noted moments where Mikki appears to guide Edie through the habitat, occasionally encouraging her movement away from the barn and into other areas—an encouraging sign as the elephants continue to explore and utilize their shared space. Asian elephant Punch has been Mikki's sole companion for three decades, so learning to be social with another African elephant is a new experience.
Edie and Mikki are demonstrating a steady, positive progression, making choices about how they spend time together and continuing to build a comfortable rhythm within Hickory Habitat. Everyone is looking forward to watching these new relationships grow in 2026!
