We invite Middle Tennessee to share their pumpkins with elephants at The Sanctuary! Elephants are the largest land animals in the world, which means they have very large appetites. In fact, they can consume around 150 pounds of fruits, vegetables, grains, and plant materials each day, including pumpkins!
From November 1 through November 30, residents of Middle Tennessee and beyond are invited to donate their pumpkins to the elephants at The Sanctuary.
Donated pumpkins can be brought to The Sanctuary’s Elephant Discovery Center, located at 27 East Main Street, Hohenwald, where a designated drop-off location will be available behind the building next to the 're-tired' elephant statue. Pumpkins should be uncarved, unpainted, and not decomposing.
"We love this time of year because we know the elephants will soon receive pumpkins donated by our Lewis County community and beyond. The pumpkins are always a special treat for the elephants, and we extend many thanks to all who donate,” said Todd Montgomery, Senior Manager of External Relations at The Sanctuary.
The elephants' habitats are not open for public visitation. Caregivers will deliver the donated pumpkins to enrich the elephants’ environment and supplement their foraging opportunities during the cooler months. These pumpkins not only serve as a delightful treat but also provide essential nutrients to support the elephants' health.
Pumpkin donors are invited to visit the exhibits inside The Elephant Discovery Center, which is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM (The Discovery Center will be closed on November 28 and 29). Please note that the elephants’ habitats are closed to the public.
Please spread the word and make this pumpkin season special for our elephants! For questions, call 931-796-6500.
