Winter Weather Update at The Sanctuary

During recent cold and icy weather in Middle Tennessee, our elephants were able to make their own choices—spending time indoors in warm, comfortable barns or stepping out briefly to explore winter conditions.

In one moment many supporters enjoyed, the tip of Osh’s trunk reached out from the barn to scoop up a bit of snow, as if to get a first snow taste of the year. Having come to The Sanctuary from California in 2024, snow is still a relatively new experience for Osh, and moments like these highlight the curiosity elephants can express when they feel safe and in control of their environment.

With access to heated barns, soft substrates, and plenty of food and enrichment, the elephants remained comfortable throughout the cold days and nights. Our barns are designed with backup generators and systems in place to maintain warmth during severe weather. Care Staff made sure barns were prepared in advance, including working with Facilities Staff to test generators, ordering extra produce, and planning indoor enrichment.

We are deeply grateful for the Staff's commitment and dedicated work. All are excited to see warmer and sunny days in the forecast.
