Waking Up to a New Year

Ele-Sleepers

Sleepy elephants

Our Girls awoke this morning to start another year in Sanctuary, which is truly a gift, for them and for us. While sleeping may seem like just a normal part of life to most, the ability to lie down and rest in a comfortable and safe environment is one of the many benefits that life at The Sanctuary provides. The warming sun, a light breeze, singing birds, soft grasses (or even a little mud!), with best friends nearby, all make for a perfect setting for "nap time" any time of day.

The Girls lower their huge bodies into reclining positions and come to rest on their sides, with legs and trunks curled up in comfort. They each have favorite places throughout the habitat, though it seems that any place can suffice when the time is right. When nap time is over, they appear to waken slowly, eyes opening, looking around, trunk moving slightly to check the breeze, then rolling up using their legs as leverage. Some may seem to "hop up" more quickly than the camera can catch. No matter the time or the place, all the Girls enjoy the opportunity to indulge in some peaceful slumber.

From all of us here at The Sanctuary,
we wish you a very Happy New Year!
