Mikki & Nosey Take an Important First Step

Mikki and Nosey took an important step in their ongoing introduction process a few weeks ago. Nosey, a 43-year-old African female and Sanctuary resident since 2017, shared space for the first time with Mikki, a 40-year-old African female who arrived last year from Louisville, Kentucky.

As with all elephant introductions, Care Staff took a thoughtful, gradual approach guided by the elephants themselves. Mikki and Nosey had already spent significant time interacting over a barrier, where Staff observed a mix of calm, affiliative behaviors alongside moments of boundary-setting—both normal and expected as elephants begin learning about one another.

During the first shared-space experience, Mikki demonstrated typical dominant social behaviors she has long been known for, while Nosey showed confidence and awareness, creating space when needed and then choosing to re-engage. Throughout the introduction, hay and bamboo were spread across the habitat, offering opportunities for exploration and helping keep the experience positive.

The session ended on a good note, with both elephants settling into the space and eating independently. Overall, the introduction reflected healthy, species-appropriate behavior and a promising start as Mikki and Nosey begin establishing their relationship.

At The Elephant Sanctuary, introductions are never rushed. Each step forward is guided by patience, trust, and respect for elephant choice. Mikki and Nosey’s first shared-space experience is just one part of a careful, ongoing process, and we look forward to watching their relationship continue to unfold.
