Delhi
was the first elephant ever confiscated by
the USDA. She arrived at The Elephant Sanctuary
Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003 as dawn was breaking.
Her front feet, swollen and painful from infection
and chemical burns, were of great concern to
her new caregivers and every effort was made
to make her more comfortable. She was treated,
pampered, and loved.... and she responded!
After many months of quarantine, Delhi was
allowed to join the herd. She now has a family
of sisters who welcome her, love her, and
interact with her. She is thriving! Delhi recently
celebrated her second anniversary at the Sanctuary,
and a
slide show was put together to commemorate
this special day.
On November 17, 2005, after years of thwarted attempts to rescue Lota - suffering from
TB and related health concerns - we were finally
able to bring Lota and her good friend Misty
to the Sanctuary. Thin, emaciated, and in the
last throes of her disease, Lota emerged from
the trailer into a world she could scarcely
imagine. Although we were not able to save
this gallant creature, her last few months
gave her a glimpse of life with people who
truly cared. She and Misty shared every waking
moment - they were soulmates who leaned on
each other for comfort and friendship. Lota
passed away February 9, 2005, with Misty at
her side. A slide show
commemorates what would
have been her first anniversary.
Misty is doing really well. Of course, when Lota passed away, Misty
was devastated and would stand staring off
into space - how she missed her constant companion
and friend. She could not join
the herd, as she had been exposed to TB and
was still in quarantine. Extra attention was
given to Misty and her caregivers did everything
possible to tend to her emotional needs. Her
caregivers attest to her marvelous spirit and
joy of life as she recovers at The Elephant
Sanctuary. A slide show documents her life
after Lota's death.
